"Ah lubs trains!"

What is it about toddler boys and the fascination with trains? DS has developed a passion for trains, and not just Thomas the Tank Engine, either. He loves them all.

His first train ride was on NJ Transit, just one stop to the town next to ours. The ride was only about 4 minutes long, but he was totally enthralled. He kept staring at the conductor, too. The next ride was on the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad, on the hour-long "Song and Story Train." He was absolutely spellbound, the moment he realized we were on a moving train. It wasn't the usual vintage steam engine, but a diesel, yet he was glued to his seat almost the entire time.

We borrowed a book from the library, I Love Trains! by Philemon Sturges, and I have to read it to him 3-6 times a day....in addition to his Thomas board books, Freight Train by Donald Crews (why do I want to keep typing Harry Crews?!), and Trains by Byron Barton. In the morning, he now greets us with a line from one of the Thomas books, "Good morning, Persh-tee!" (Percy the Small Green Engine).

And when I ask if if he loves mama, he says: "Ah lubs trains!"

Bebe's first concert!

Last Sunday, we took the bebe to his first live music experience, the sold out Ralph's World show at Joe's Pub in NYC. He was one of the youngest fans there, at nearly 17 mos. old. Poor bebe was scared at first, because of the loud music, and cried and clung like a monkey. But after nursing (yes, you can breastfeed while seated on a barstool!) and some cuddle time, he got into the music. He was happy to hear "Peggy's Pie Parlor Polka," the song that first inspired his love of polka. We even got to go onstage near the end of the show, when Ralph Covert invited the kids (and parents of wee ones) to join him for a few songs.

Here we are getting Ralph Covert's autograph on our copy of The Amazing Adventures of Kid Astro (black square added to protect the innocent):

I am wearing the bebe in my custom mei tai (an Asian baby carrier), the subject of a previous post.

It was a rockin' show. The band was really tight, and the sound was great. They played most of our favorite songs from all five albums. I'm glad we trekked back to NYC for the gig, even if it meant the bebe missed his usual nap. He conked out before we even hit Houston St. on our way back, though, and didn't wake till we got home.
